The 9th of November is a major historical day as 26 years ago the wall (Iron Curtain) between West and East Germany fell. During my childhood I lived a few hundreds metres away from the Berlin Wall. I remember a lot of things from that period like the exciting rides with the S-Bahn when the train entered the underground Eastpart of Berlin....the S-Bahn was built before WWII. Or the extreme waiting periods at the borders and the very unfriendly looking Vopo's.
Two weeks ago I visted a museum near the former border at Mackenrode and I was impressed by the stories I read. Stories about escaping attempts and stories about betrayal and oppression. This photo is for the young woman who lost in 1971 her both legs by stepping on a landmine during her attempt to escape together with her partner and child.....and for all the others who died near the Inner German border on their way to FREEDOM!
