The ground colour of the upperside is dull brown with a broad orange crescent on the femal forewing and a faint yellowish smugde on the male forewing. The male also has a black spot at the end of the cell. Both sexes have conspicuous orange 'tails' on the hindwing. The underside is quite unmistakable, bright orange with narrow white streaks and a red margin in both sexes. The female is a little brighter than the male. Flight July to September in a single brood. The larval foodplant is Blackthorn but other Prunus species are eaten.
