Pyronia tithonus - Gatekeeper - Oranje zandoogje - Rotbraunes Ochsenauge
The upperside of the forwing is bright orange with broad, dark-brown borders and a twin eye-spot. The male, which is generally much smaller than the female, has a broad brown sex-brand running diagonally through the centre of the wing. In both sexes the hindwing is dark brown with an orange post-dical band that sometimes extends inwards to cover much of the wing. There may be one or two small eye-spots near the rear corner. The underside of the forewing resembles the upperside although the male sex-brand is not visible. The underside of the hindwing is dark brown, mottled with yellow or grey in the outer region. The latter contains a variable number of small eye-spots, often reduced to white dots. Flight from June to September. The larval foodplants includes a wide range of grasses.
