Boloria pales - Shepard's Fritillary - Herdersparelmoervlinder - Hochalpen- Perlmuttfalter
The upperside is orange with a dark patch in the basal half of the hindwing. The black spots include complete post-discal and submarginal series on each wing, while the discal spots are rather linear. The underside of the forewing is orange with a yellow tip and faint black spots while the underside of the hindwing is largely orange and yellow with white marginal spots. Females are larger and paler than males; their underside of the hindwing is often greenish at the base.
Flight from June to August in stony mountainsides from about the tree-line to 3000 metres. The larval foodplants are violets and Alpine Bistort.
Similar species: Mountain Fritillary is usually bigger and there is a slight difference in the straightness of the spots on the upperside of the forewing. For identification of both species it's helpfull to see/photograph the female with open wings which is, with boloria napaea, paler with often a greenish tinge.
