Melitaea athalia - Heath Fritillary - Bosparelmoervlinder - Wachtelweizen Scheckenfalter
The ground colour of the upperside is a rich orange-brown, overlaid with a black or dark-brown network formed by the dark veins and wavy cross-lines. The underside of the forewing is orange with black spots and paly yellow lunules around the margin. The underside of the hindwing has a prominent cream or silvery-white band through the centre, while the basal area contains an irregular orange band and several large pale spots. All the bands and spots are edged with black, which together with the dark veins, produces a distinctly chequered appearance. The fringes of all wings are clearly chequered on both surfaces. Flight from April to October in two broods in open woodlands and flower-rich grasslands. The larval foodplants include Common Cow-wheat, Ribwort and Germander Speedwell.
