Coenonympha gardetta- Alpine Heath - Alpenhooibeestje - Alpen-Wiesenvögelchen
The uppersides, never seen at rest, are dusky brown, with a variable orange or brick-red flush on the forewing and a faint indication of eye-spots showing through from the underside of the hindwing. Both wings may have a narrow orange outer border. THe underside of the forewing is brick-red in both sexes with a variable grey border. There may be a small apical eye-spot. The underside of the hindwing is dusky brown or grey with a conspicuous pale post-discal band containing eye-spots of varying size and intensity. The eye-spots are not ringed with yellow and the anterior spot, on the front edge of the wing, is enclosed in the pale band. Beyond the band, there is usually a silvery-grey submarginal line and an orange or yellow marginal line. Flight from June to September in montane grasslands between 800 and 3000m. The larval foodplants ar various grasses.
