The ground colour of the upperside is orange but often heavily clouded with brown with a band of orange or yellow spots. The hindwing is dark brown with sometimes three bands of orange/yellow spots but often with no spots at all. The underside of the forewing is orange with a pale border and black spots just beyond the cell. The underside of the hindwing is yellowish brown or orange with white spots near the base and a white band through the centre. The outer edge bears an arc of large white marginal lunules and a clear yellow line edged with black on both sides. Flight from May to September in one or two broods in flower-rich grasslands. The larval foodplants are valerians.
