From the astronomical view, last week summer has started but from my view it is already autumn......maybe that is a sign as a lot of things do not go well or not as I planned at the moment. Since the day before yesterday I have a new pet ‘Evenlientje van de Breemortel’. From one day on the other she had a great chance to end in the slaughterhouse or getting homeless so now I need to rent a meadow for her. By the way, Evenlientje is a pony. On my way to her yesterday I almost killed a yellow butterfly (not knowing that he was resting near the path). It was a Clouded Yellow and I was very delighted as I have never seen before this species nearby. But, as it is ‘autumn’ outside the Clouded Yellow flew up only for a few metres. To avoid the risk of getting kicked to death again, I took him home. These yellow butterflies always try to get camouflaged so they prefer green leaves or yellow flowers to rest on but not a pink flower. But as I like pink, I arranged a setting for him. Now he is resting again on a camouflaged place as I do not want him to become bird food.

Like every year, last weekend I visited my favourite butterfly area in the Eifel. Entering the area I saw two men and one of them was greeting me with ‘Hello Silvia’. That was a nice welcome and they invited my to photograph ‘their’ Duke of Burgundy. Long live Facebook! Comparing to last year, I fortunately found more butterflies but not the tremendous amount and variety of 2011. After I left my favourite area with Purple-edged Coppers and hundreds of Small Blue’s, I visited two big meadows full of Common Bistort but I couldn’t find one single fritillary. Instead, at every meadow which I visited I found the Duke of Burgundy, a butterfly which I haven’t seen there in June in the past 15 years! I remember a visit of early June 2007 with some stress of not knowing which butterfly to photograph first and no shortage of fritillaries......I hope that one day I will have this luxury problem again!
More photo’s are added in my Gallery Butterflies -> Germany - Eifel -> 2013 A few days ago I was pleasantly surprised to find some fresh Common Blues nearby. Unfortunately it was very windy and the first evening it was impossible to photograph them so I only looked to the big setting red ball of fire. The next evening I returned to the same place and found out that the male Common Blues prefer sleeping places at almost the same location. Only the females were switched and I found a resting female on the ‘right’ place and waited some time for the deep colours in the sun......and almost became blind by looking into my view finder. At home I was editing my photo’s and although I liked one photo very much I was not really satisfied with the result as I had an other photo in mind. Fortunately the clouds were disappearing the next evening so again I drove to the area and again I found the two male Common Blues and one was sitting out of the wind between the high grass so he was ‘mine’ and finally I could make the photo which I had in mind for a while!
Finally summer arrived in the Netherlands and when I woke up this morning I had to think about a friend from long time ago and how things sometimes develop in life. In that days I was singing ‘Gold of day memories change me in these times’ and never realised how true this is. Friends come but the majority is leaving again and when I was younger I was often disappointed as sometimes for me it did not make sense. Growing older I learned that everybody is bringing a kind of gift but that sometimes you had to let them go to grow as human being. Like the song said ‘Somewhere there is some place, that one million eyes can't see. And somewhere there is someone, who can see what I can see”.......Someone, Somewhere in Summertime. Two days ago I met someone.......a male Cockchafer, a Dutch one on my Geranium. For two days he was ‘living’ on my Geranium; I think that he did not know that Geraniums are not his kind of food plants as he had a thin stool.......so I choose to photograph his front ;-). Brilliant days, wake up on brilliant days
Shadows of brilliant ways will change all the time Memories, burning gold memories Gold of day memories change me in these times Somewhere there is some place, that one million eyes can't see And somewhere there is someone, who can see what I can see Someone, Somewhere In Summertime Someone, Somewhere In Summertime Someone, Somewhere In Summertime ©Simple Minds/New Gold Dream (album) After reading Sigmund Freud, Otto Rank, Carl Jung, Frederic Skinner and Carl Rogers I needed a little break, so this evening I drove to an area to search for resting butterflies. The score: 1 Small Heath and 1 old Large White. After the sun appeared behind a big cloud the Small Heath was active again and flew away; fortunately not far I found him on a beautiful yellow flower. When I walked back to my car I saw in a distance a big snake on the road and I was wondering how that is possible in the Netherlands. I think due to the fact that I was focussed on macro a while, I was unable to see as well as before....when I looked again I saw a row of tiny little ducklings crossing the road swaying......
