Today, 22 years ago, the East German Government announced that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans came to borders and more by accident the East German Government gave the order to open the borders. More and more East and West Germans crossed and climbed onto the wall and everybody was in a celebratory mood. It was a memorable day!
The weeks after, a euphoric public and souvenir hunters chipped away parts of the wall; the governments later used industrial equipment to remove most of the rest. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on 3 October 1990.
Today is a special day for me as I was born and raised in Berlin (and lived a few hundreds meter from the wall).
