Bring the action! Like every year, I hear the Little Owls (Athene noctua) screaming nearby but on March 1st, it was the first time that I saw two owls sitting on my birdhouse. One week later, when I came back in the evening from a visit to the moor frog area, I heard them shout as soon as I get out of my car and I knew that they were nearby. One owl was sitting in the birch above the birdhouse. Very slowly I put down my tripod and with a shuttertime of 25 seconds I did not expect any reasonable image. After 5 images the other owl came and together they disappeared. As I have reasons to believe that there is real chance that they will use my birdhouse for the next generation, I created a new page on my website 'Little Owl'. Of course I hope that the day will come that I an 'catch' them at day.

Last Tuesday finally winter arrived in the Netherlands. As snow was forecasted and I had to work, I set my alarm clock very early. In the Netherlands you have three options after snowfall: 1.) Leaving in the middle of the night 2.) Leaving in the early noon after the traffic jams are gone and just in time before all the people who started early will create new traffic jams 3.) Stay at home. My choice was option 1 and it was more a kind of test drive for my new German car. The advantage of leaving early is that the snow is fresh and with a almost normal speed I was too early at the office......I had to put on the light! The true story is that due to the fact I was that early I ‘met’ a beautiful big owl which was sitting on a branch, covered with snow, above the road. The scenery was lovely and I enjoyed every second until the owl (Strix aluco) flew away. These kind of encounters are precious and give me a lot of happiness. Immediately I remembered my trip to France in 2010 where a family of Long-eared Owls lived above the terrace of the accommodation. In a few month I will be back in France and I hope that I will be lucky to witness such a beautiful owl family again.
